A Summer Newsletter From IONS

August 2012

Dear Noetic Now Subscribers,

IONS was founded by astronaut Edgar Mitchell because of his realization that the human mind and the physical universe do not exist independently, but are interconnected. He was a pioneer in his conviction that we need to better understand the connection between mind and matter if we want to realize our full potential and create a healthier, more sustainable, and more humane world.

The consciousness research and education that IONS has been doing and supporting for almost 40 years has helped shift our understanding of the world and enabled profound improvements in people's lives. But widespread changes in worldview don't happen overnight; there is a lot still to be done and discovered.

The Next Generation of Noetic Scientists
One of the ways fundamental shifts in understanding and worldview happen is through generational change.

"An important scientific innovation rarely makes its way rapidly winning over and converting its opponents; it rarely happens that Saul becomes Paul. What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out and that the growing generation is familiarized with the idea from the beginning."

            —Max Planck
              The Philosophy of Physics

Here at IONS we're inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the up and coming noetic scientists participating in our thriving internship program. A revolving team of 6 interns works on research and education programs with our senior scientists, Dean Radin, Cassandra Vieten, and Marilyn Schlitz, and with other scholars in residence. Our current interns – all in their early twenties – include a Chilean Clinical Psychology student who just completed a year at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, a recent graduate of UC Santa Barbara in Religious Studies, and a recent graduate who studied Physics in Medicine at the University of Notre Dame. "I'm actually working on these projects I used to read about!" enthused intern Andrea Livingston, a graduate student in Consciousness and Transformative Studies at JFK University.

"Training the next generation of noetic scientists in frontier research is one of the most important things IONS can be doing to move the field forward," says Executive Director of Research Cassandra Vieten, who adds that working with the interns is a favorite part of her job. "They work fast and see things with fresh eyes, and it is great watching them interact with the pioneering Noetic Scientists who come to our weekly symposiums." Among other things, interns assist with library research, data collection, entry, and management, laboratory experiments and survey projects, and multimedia education and curriculum development.

The weekly research symposiums are a huge hit. Each Wednesday interns and staff gather for a lunchtime presentation and conversation about an aspect of work in noetic science. The interns are inspired by people who have built careers in noetic science, and it helps give them ideas about the kind of work they might do themselves. "The symposia have been awesome," said Joey Burnett, the intern who initially encouraged IONS to create them. "IONS is using its networks to expose interns to great figures in the consciousness field." Presenters at the symposia have included IONS research staff, extended faculty and special guests, such as Peter Russell, David Lukoff, and Charles Tart. The intern program is managed by IONS Research Assistant Charlene Farrell.

Collective Consciousness Study at Burning Man

IONS Research Scientists Cassandra Vieten and Dean Radin, and visiting scholar Arnaud DeLorme, are collaborating on a fun experiment at this summer's Burning Man gathering in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.

Past studies have shown that mass celebrations can impact the output of random number generators (RNGs), making their output more ordered and not completely random. The focused attention of over 50,000 people in a very isolated setting that occurs when the man is burned at Burning Man provides a great opportunity for this kind of study.

To increase the fun quotient and help educate people, they'll be using a giant colored laser to show when the random number generators are deviating from their usual random output. Along with IONS, the Global Consciousness Project, the Global Coherence Project, and Black Rock Solar and others are collaborating.

Check out this video to learn more or support this project with a mini-donation (and get a cool sticker or t-shirt!).

Tuesday, October 9th
10 AM – 5 PM

The world needs you to join in sacred ceremony as IONS hosts the Q'ero Shamans! The Q'ero Shamans are Quechua-speaking indigenous peoples and the last of the Incas. For 500 years the Q'ero elders preserved a sacred prophecy of a great change, or "Pachuti," in which the world would be turned right side up, harmony and order would be restored, and chaos and discorder ended. Don Francisco, Don Humberto, Dona Bernadina, and Wilbert have traveled from the high Andes of Peru to perform their Despachos (soul repair initiations) to help us in this time of great transition.

Victoria Johnson of The Four Winds Society and Eric Greenberg will facilitate this special event.
